Bright primary colours, architecture, and the work of Impressionist painters along with her background in drafting, graphic design and sense of humour all influence the style and subject matter of Deborah’s mats. Her mats represent a historical art form. Originally people who could not afford rugs would paint designs on their floors; later, readily available sailcloth was used, and now, durable and easy to clean vinyl is the medium. The flexibility of the vinyl has allowed Deborah and Ray to develop a whole new line of hand cut free form placemats for children, adults and your pets that can be personalized!!! Now in it’s 15th successful year Underfoot/THE MATLADY has branched out into lawn furniture, stools, key kaddies, sea chests, coat hooks and much more all made under the careful scrutiny of Ray and painted in bright colours by Deborah - all sold from their store located at 216 Central St., Chester, N.S.
